I was reminded of something important in the clinic this week. A long-term client said to me, “Do you remember, early on, when you told me that your hope for me was that I would find joy in my sexuality?”
I did remember and I was so happy to hear that that comment had stayed with her. Because that really is the heart of my work: not fixing or striving for some ideal version of sex, but finding joy in it.
So many people arrive at the clinic carrying heaviness around sex - pressure, shame, confusion, disappointment, obligation. Sex becomes something to manage, negotiate, perform or endure, rather than something that nourishes and delights.
Yet when we start talking and look beneath all that heaviness, what most people are longing for in their sexuality is simple:
To feel at ease in their body.
To feel alive.
To feel pleasure without self-consciousness.
To feel connected to themselves, and to the other.
To feel joy.
Joy doesn’t mean fireworks every time. It doesn’t mean constant desire or endless novelty. And it certainly doesn’t mean “doing it right.” I like to think of joy as a felt sense of yes.
Yes to your body. Yes to sensation. Yes to curiosity. Yes to presence. Yes to allowing pleasure rather than chasing it.
For many of us, joy has slipped out of our sexual lives or was never really there. Not because we’ve failed, but because sex has become, or always was, burdened with expectation.
What if, instead of striving for more, we softened into enjoyment? What if sexuality was less about effort, and more about allowing?
As we move into the festive season, my invitation is simple: Let joy be your compass.
Joy might look like slowing down, laughing together, choosing rest over obligation, touching without agenda, or simply being kinder to yourself.
Sexual healing doesn’t begin with technique. It begins when we remember that pleasure is allowed - and that joy is not something we earn, but something we reclaim.
